The Paving of the Way

Advent Devotional ~ Day 18

Read Luke 1; John 1:1-34

In Luke 1 and John 1:1-34, we read stories about Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph and John the Baptist. All of these people are pointing in the same direction, speaking of the same event that is about to unfold, towards the illuminating truth that the Son of God is coming, who will baptize with fire and Spirit (John 1:33, 34). To those who receive Him, he will give to power and authority to be God’s children.

God is the one who paves the way here, though the Spirit sent upon his people, so that those who await his arrival may be ready. John the Baptist was filled with Spirit, even in his mother’s womb (Luke 1:15), Mary was filled with the Spirit (1:35), so was Elizabeth (1:41), neighbors around them were filled with awe and finally the Spirit rested on Jesus (John 1:32). Only in the Spirit of God and by the Spirit of God do we testify that Jesus is the Son of God, to whom all power is given in heaven and on earth, through whom all things were made, who gives us eternal life, and in whom we receive the authority to become God’s children. Only by the same power of the Spirit are we able to tell people to be aware of His return, to get ready, to be awake, and hopeful in expectation of the King.

Reflection

As our hearts receive His words in this holy season of waiting and expecting, we should take heed of His promises, blessings, warnings, and commands. With joyful songs, with the faith of Mary and Elizabeth, may the Spirit lead us and teach us all we need to know about the eternal truths of God and hopes for humanity. As we pray, let us pray for a strong faith, that will level all the suspicions we might have as the road is being paved in our hearts for the coming of the King. As we look around us, may our eyes be open for those who are searching for the truth, purpose and peace. Let us proclaim the Good News of Jesus until he comes back, and not be silenced as Zechariah, who did not believe God’s promise.

Application questions

1. Advent is a season of focusing on the Lord. But, it is also a season of remembering that God is faithful to His promises. What promises of the Lord can you remember being fulfilled in your life?

2. As you remember the promises of the Lord unfolding in your personal life, which promises do you need Him to keep in this next season of your life? Will you boldly and confidently present your needs to your Father, knowing that he gives good gifts to His children?
